Knowing the Wedding Etiquette Observed in Thailand
If you have been fortunate enough to receive an invitation to the nuptials of a friend in this Asian region, there are certain things you need to be mindful of especially if you are not a local. The marriage ceremony in the Land of Smiles is different from those observed in other countries, especially in the Western ones. As such, you need to research and enhance your knowledge in order to prevent making embarrassing gaffes that may be seen as disrespectful to the family of the bride and groom.
Clothing
Never wear black apparel to the wedding since this is usually worn at funerals. While your dark suits or dresses may seem flattering and elegant on you, it will not give the same effect on your hosts. This applies for both the upper and lower garments. In addition, tops that have deep necklines and short skirts with are inappropriate and considered lacking in class at temples. You might be flashing more flesh than necessary when you get to the portion in the nuptial rite where you have sat on the floor.
Conduct
While seated on the ground during the marriage service, remember to position the tips of your feet away from the monk, as well as the statue of the Buddha. Furthermore, never stand while the former is still sitting, even when you will just do so to take photographs.
Gifts
Giving money or a cheque instead of an item or appliance to the newlyweds is acceptable. This may even be preferred by the groom and the bride since they are just starting out in the marital phase of their lives. Make sure that you place it in an envelope. You can use the one which contained your wedding invitation if it has your name written on it. Hand it over at the registration area when you arrive at the reception. The amount depends on your social standing in relation to the married couple, as well as your salary. You can also provide a merit gift or donate a sum to the local Buddhist temple.
